AirPods won't connect to a Windows PC
AirPods do work on Windows, just without the automatic switching. Pair them from inside the case with the button held, then set them as the output device by hand — Windows often pairs them and then keeps playing through the speakers.
Pair them properly
The order matters and it isn't obvious.
- Put both AirPods in the case and leave the lid open.
- Hold the button on the back of the case until the light flashes white. Amber means it hasn't entered pairing mode yet — keep holding.
- On the PC: Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Add device → Bluetooth → pick the AirPods.
If they don't appear, close the lid, wait ten seconds, and start again.
Set them as the output device
This is the step people miss. Windows will happily report the AirPods as Connected while still sending audio to the laptop speakers.
Click the volume icon in the taskbar, click the arrow next to the output device, and select the AirPods explicitly.
Fix the terrible microphone quality
If you use the AirPods mic on Windows, audio quality collapses — everything sounds thin and muffled. That's not a fault, it's Bluetooth.
When the mic is active, the connection switches from a high-quality one-way audio profile to a low-bandwidth two-way one that has to carry both directions at once. Windows exposes these as two separate devices: Stereo (good sound, no mic) and Hands-Free (bad sound, working mic).
In Sound settings, disable the Hands-Free device and use a separate microphone for calls. You can't have both good playback and the AirPods mic at the same time.
Deal with them stealing focus back to your phone
AirPods will jump back to an Apple device mid-use. There's no cross-platform switching to configure.
On the iPhone, turn off Automatic Ear Detection and automatic switching for those AirPods, or just turn Bluetooth off on the phone while you're using them on the PC.
Remove and re-pair if they're stuck
Remove the device in Windows Bluetooth settings, then reset the AirPods: with them in the case, lid open, hold the case button for about 15 seconds until the light flashes amber and then white.
That resets them to factory pairing state. Pair again from step one.
