The Chelsea Galleries

Around two hundred commercial art galleries packed into the West 20s — all free, all open to the public, and collectively a better contemporary art survey than most museums.

They're free and you're allowed in

This is the bit people get wrong. Commercial galleries are free, public, and open to anyone — you walk in, you look, you walk out. Nobody will approach you and nobody expects you to buy anything.

There's usually a desk with a person at it who is not interested in you. That's fine. Take a price list if there's one out; it's part of the experience.

Between them these galleries show the artists who will be in museums in twenty years, and it costs nothing.

How to work the blocks

The density is West 20th through West 27th, between Tenth and Eleventh Avenues. Ground floors and upper floors both.

Walk one street west, cross, walk the next street east. Dip into whatever looks interesting from the pavement. In two hours you'll have seen fifteen shows.

Most galleries close on Sundays and Mondays and many close or go quiet in August. Tuesday to Saturday is the window.

Opening nights

Galleries cluster their openings on Thursday evenings, typically 6 to 8pm. They are free, they are open to the public, and there is usually wine.

Walking the blocks on a Thursday evening in the autumn season is one of the better free nights out in New York, and it is entirely normal to attend without knowing anybody.

Getting there

The C or E to 23rd Street, then walk west to Tenth Avenue. About 15 minutes from Midtown.

It sits directly under the High Line, so the natural move is to walk the High Line and drop down at 23rd Street into the gallery blocks.

Getting around once you're there

Streets are flat. Most of the larger ground-floor galleries are step-free; some of the upstairs ones in the older buildings are not. 23rd Street on the C/E is not accessible; 14th Street–Eighth Avenue is.
